April 22nd, 2025
Today, April 22, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) celebrates Earth Day. Every year more than a billion people recognize Earth Day around the world. It is a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national, and local policy changes.
The environmental stewardship we are challenged to uphold every Earth Day reflects long-held wisdom taught to us by First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples who have always been stewards of the land and water and who have always recognized a deep and reciprocal relationship with the environment.
Get Involved
This year we challenge all students and staff to participate in Earth Day and share their actions. This day is a great time to spark further discussion and interest in planet earth and sustainability.
There are many ways you can recognize Earth Day, such as:
- Pick up litter on school grounds
- Participate in a waste-free lunch
- Take action to conserve energy
- Learn more and get tips on the WRDSB Energy Conservation webpage
- Make curriculum linkages to Earth Day
- Check out the resources at Green Learning
- Take learning outside
- Have students identify various species of plants and animals around their home or neighbourhood
- Check out these plant and animal identification resources provided by the WRDSB outdoor education department
- Participate in an Earth Day Kahoot Quiz to test your school’s eco-awareness
- Calculate your Greenhouse Gas footprint using the Project Neutral calculator
Our Commitment to Energy Conservation
We are committed to reducing the energy consumption of its schools. This reduces how much the WRDSB contributes to climate change. Since 2008, WRDSB has reduced its energy consumption by 16%.
