At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we strive to recognize Black Brilliance all year long. February is Black Brilliance Month. We aim to create an environment where African, Caribbean and Black-identifying (ACBi) students and staff see their brilliance:

  • Highlighted
  • Represented
  • Celebrated

Black Brilliance 2026 – Ubuntu

February is Black Brilliance Month, an opportunity to highlight African, Caribbean and Black identifying (ACBi) histories, and their everyday Brilliance, though we strive to recognize Black Brilliance all year long. WRDSB schools should be places where ACBi students see their identities, stories and contributions reflected in the learning, experience belonging, and are supported to flourish.

About Ubuntu

A strong connection between school and home is central to student success. At the WRDSB, we understand that relationships between schools, parents, families and caregivers are essential for students to:

  • Achieve academic success
  • Experience a sense of belonging

This year’s theme is the African philosophy of Ubuntu: “I am because we are”.

The theme highlights:

  • Interconnectedness
  • Community
  • Collective responsibility

Recognizing Black Brilliance

Recognizing Black History Month is the basis of Black Brilliance Month at WRDSB and we invite students and staff to learn more about its origins. Learn more:

During Black Brilliance Month, we invite all WRDSB schools to:

  • Listen to student voices
  • Teach about and honour the African, Caribbean and Black Diaspora

February 9 to 13 is Black Brilliance Week

Black Brilliance Week runs from February 9 to 13 and is an opportunity for students and staff to learn more and support our recognition of Black Brilliance.

February 13 is Black Brilliance Day

Started in 2022, Black Brilliance Day centres and celebrates Black joy, diversity and identity.

On this day, we ask that schools support students in planning assemblies or events. These should:

  • Honour Black Canadian diverse identities
  • Provide learning opportunities for all students to improve their Black cultural history
